Shani Davis

Shani Davis is not a name everyone knows.  Those who do know it, know it is great.  Shani Davis is an African American who broke boundaries almost every time he has stepped on the ice.  In the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy, Shani became the first African American to win an individual gold medal in the 1,000 meter speed skating competition.  When he won his first gold medal, he skated a victory lap while holding a teddy bear.  This year, in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Shani Davis did what was being doubted when he won silver in the 1,500 meter and later skipped out on the 500 meter.  People began questioning how serious he was.  He was really saving his energy for what he wanted.  The 1,000 meter.  On Wednesday night, Davis became the first man to successfully defend his title in this event.  After winning his second consecutive gold in the 1,000 meter, Shani did a victory lap with an American flag on his chest.

Social Media Revolution

People think social media is a fad, but after seeing this youtube video, I’m sure the opinions of many would change.    In this video, facts are thrown at you about all different websites and search engines.  For example, “if facebook were a country, it would be the world’s 4th largest.”  One statistic that shocked me was that 1 in every 8 couples that married last year, met via social media.  There were a lot of awesome facts that made me realize how superior our world is compared the to past generations.

Father of “Balloon Boy” goes to jail

A few months back the whole country was put on edge when they turned on the television.  A little boy was supposedly floating over Colorado in a balloon.  Hours and hours of suspense passed and almost everyone had heard.  There were people thinking the boy was hurt and there were smart people that caught onto to the whole fiasco.  That same evening, reports were put out that the whole thing was a hoax and the parents made it up for publicity.

The father of this boy, Richard Heene, was trialed and sentenced to 90 days in custody.  His sentence started today and he has to spend 30 days in jail but he is eligible for work release during the last 60 days.  If he has a job during the time he is in jail, he is allowed to go to work during the day and return to spend the night.  Four years of probation are also necessary for him with 100 hours of community service a year.

Heene reported that his son, Falcon, was in a balloon floating over Colorado in October.  Authorities were freaking out trying to figure out ways to track down the balloon and safely rescue Falcon.  Once this story hit the news, people all throughout America were intrigued and followed the story from beginning to end.  The balloon was caught and brought down and to some people’s surprise, Falcon was nowhere to be found.  Shockingly, the Falcon was found hiding safe in his home.

The story was not over yet.  Falcon was interviewed and he was asked by his father why he had not come out from hiding when he noticed his parents calling for him.  “You guys said we did this for the show,” said Falcon.  The parents were later interviewed and reported that Falcon was just confused. Heene’s wife, Mayumi, later admitted to the whole thing being a hoax and Falcon was at home the whole time.  She pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charge of false reporting to authorities and was sentenced to 20 days in jail but that wasn’t to start until after her husband’s sentencing so that the kid’s would have somebody to take care of them.

At this point, the Sheriff claims there is an overwhelming amount of evidence against Mayumi and Richard.  The country was shocked by this plot for fame and we learned what people would do to achieve it even if it is just a few hours.

“Dawn of a new era” for AIDS in South Africa

Did you know there are about 5.7 million South Africans suffering from HIV?  This is more than any other country in the world.  South Africa has been facing this epidemic for years and people are beginning to take a stand.  South Africa’s president, Jacob Zuma, announced the new policies he his making for the country.  While speaking in the country’s Capitol, Zuma spoke about how more people would be getting treated for HIV.  This thankfully, doesn’t only include adults but it also means all HIV positive babies under the age of one will be treated as well.  He also pitched an idea that all South Africans be tested for HIV.  He even said he would be tested for HIV as a part of his campaign.  “We need extraordinary measures to reverse the trends we are seeing in the health profile of our people,” said Zuma, and he seems very strong about making these things happen.  In 2008, a Harvard study was taken and they came up with 330,000 premature deaths due to AIDS.  The problem is spreading and South Africa’s only hope is treatment and President Zuma seems to be well aware of this.

Thank you God

My Dearest brother Mark,

Where do I even begin?  You have been through a lot over the past couple years but none of it changes what kind of brother you have been to me.  Throughout it all you have been loving and caring and I can’t thank you enough for how much you have helped me.  You have given me advice and you have helped me so much.  Nothing makes me happier than knowing I have a brother that would do anything for me.  I’m lucky, I have three, but you never let me forget it.  I know if anything ever happened to me you would be right there to fix it.  I want you to remember forever, that no matter what happens or what mistakes you make, I’ll always forgive you.  I want you to know how proud I am of you for doing the right thing and wanting to get better and get your life back on track.  It makes you that much better and it makes me so happy.  Oh and I didn’t forget, Happy Birthday!  I love you and you are the best big brother I could ask for!

Mom & Dad,

You’re #2 child here.  I want to let you both know how thankful I am for everything you have done and given me.  I could sit here forever and tell you how I know when you ground me it’s for my own good.  I could mention how we fight all the time but it’s only because you’re my parents and I’m supposed to do it and I don’t mean it.  Or how about that you guys would do anything for me and I love you.  No, I’m not going to talk about that be, well, you know all that stuff already!  I want to let you know how much I appreciate the other stuff.  For instance, it is greatly appreciated that you guys love me second most after Michael, of course.  I mean, it’s great!  I’m just kidding Megan.  Really though, I don’t know how I could possibly let you guys know just how much you mean to me and how thankful I am for you both.  Maybe I’ll tell you at dinner, we’ll see.   I want you both to remember that, no matter how I act or what I say to you just let it go in one ear and out the other because all that matters is that I love you guys!

Michael,

You’re awesome, plain and simple.  At least you were until you went to college.  I understand though.  You need to do your cool college kid stuff.  You’re still pretty awesome and I am so thankful to have you in my life.  I would like to take this space to reminisce on good old times when you lived here because I feel like that’s the best way to show you how grateful I am.  This is vague, but it was always fun sitting in your room from I’d say sixth grade to before you left just listening and talking.  I’d listen to your ridiculous stories and you would listen to mine when I had them.  You’re the closest to my age, so watching you go through high school gave me a good idea of how I wanted to go through my four years.  You were that kid that participated and got good grades (making you numero uno in mom and dad’s hearts). I’d say you were a pretty good role give or take a few traits.  I’m just trying to tell you how great of an older brother you are and always have been.  As if I haven’t written enough letters about you or myspace “hero sections” to you,  I’m sure you don’t get tired of hearing it and I certainly don’t get tired of saying it because I mean it.  You are the best older brother ever and I love you so much!

Chuckie the Chipmunk

It was an ordinary Thursday on Chipmunk Court when Chuckie the chipmunk went to his friend’s house.  He walked in the door and looked out the backyard. He saw a huge wall that looked like it was going up forever.  He ignored it and went to the backyard to play.  All of a sudden, Chuckie and his friend heard a deep voice.  They looked around and all they saw was a tree.  Oddly enough, it was the tree talking.  “There is a bird up there in me and the first one to kiss it will be granted one super power of their choice.  Good luck!”  As fast as lightening the two little chipmunks scurried up the tree and the first one to get there was Chuckie.  He pondered and pondered on what super power he wanted when it hit him.  He saw that mysterious wall out of the corner of his eye.  “I wish I could fly!”  He shouted.  Before he knew it, he was soaring high in the air happier than ever.  He approached the wall and got nervous.  He flew himself to the top and the first thing he saw was a heart shaped box.  He opened it up and there was a note saying, “look down.”  He did and what he saw changed his life along with the rest of the chipmunks lives forever.

Ten things that make me laugh

1.  Sarcasm- I am very sarcastic.  I love when I’m with people and someone makes a sarcastic comment.  I don’t care if it’s towards me or someone else.  I will most likely crack up and find it really funny.

2.  My family- When I say family, I’m talking about my parents, my brothers, my cousins, my aunt, and my uncles.  I look forward to spending the holidays with them. My uncles especially, are so funny.  I laugh so hard at family events, my stomach hurts.  I’m so lucky I don’t have to wait for holidays because we all go to a pool club and have cabanas next to each other so almost every day over the summer I get to laugh with the people I love most.

3.  My friends- All of my friends are so funny.  Their sense of humor is great and I am always laughing when I am with them.  I;m also fortunate because I have a whole bunch of friends in all different grades and no matter who I’m with, I’m constantly laughing because not only are they simply comical, but they’re sarcastic, which I mentioned I love.

4.  My brother Michael-  The best way I can describe our friendship is by telling a story.  My family was visiting him at college and the whole time we were there we were hitting each other and laughing and acting as if he never left.  We were all walking to brunch the day we were going to leave and despite the fact that it was early, we were kicking each other and quoting step brothers until finally, my mom turned around and said, “guys can we please stop acting like we’re 3 just for an hour?”  We definitely did not listen to her, we spent the whole brunch laughing.

5.  My sister Megan-  You haven’t seen creepy until you come into our room at 11 o’clock at night.  I could be in the worst mood ever, and Megan will not even try to make me laugh and I do.  I don’t know why, but she has a weird way of taking my bad mood and turning it into a good mood very easily.

6.  My Uncle Billy and Aunt Doris-  I know I mentioned my family already, but these two characters are so funny they deserve their own point.  I can’t find a way to tell you really how funny they are.  I don’t know if it’s just their pure sense of humor, or their classic jokes but every time I’m with them, I laugh so hard!

7.  Movies-  It’s so hard for me to just pick one movie that makes me laugh because every time I pick one, I think of another great one.  To name a few, Step Brothers, Dodgeball, The Comebacks, Starsky and Hutch, and the list could go on from new movies to older ones that my parents showed me.

8.  Brandon Coppola-  He basically has the ideal perfect sense of humor.  He’s sarcastic, and weird, and I can’t help but laugh at most of the things he does.  He makes these crazy sounds and weird faces that never fail to crack me up.

9.  Connor Cuccinelli-  Connor is probably one of the funniest kids I know.  Everyday before school, during lunch, through the halls, I get a stomach ache from laughing so hard because he’s just so goofy.

10. Dan Powers-  Dan is so laid back and cool.  He makes so many jokes all the time and is always making everyone laugh.  Megan and I basically look at Dan as a few notches below God.
