Shani Davis is not a name everyone knows. Those who do know it, know it is great. Shani Davis is an African American who broke boundaries almost every time he has stepped on the ice. In the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy, Shani became the first African American to win an individual gold medal in the 1,000 meter speed skating competition. When he won his first gold medal, he skated a victory lap while holding a teddy bear. This year, in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Shani Davis did what was being doubted when he won silver in the 1,500 meter and later skipped out on the 500 meter. People began questioning how serious he was. He was really saving his energy for what he wanted. The 1,000 meter. On Wednesday night, Davis became the first man to successfully defend his title in this event. After winning his second consecutive gold in the 1,000 meter, Shani did a victory lap with an American flag on his chest.
